Program Descriptions
| Abbot 1 | Abbot John Daido Loori, Roshi - Indestructible Spirit - The 300 Koan Shobogenzo, Case 288, Zhaozhou's Indestructible Nature. This talk was given at Zen Mountain Monastery in December 2005. True Dharma Eye: Master Dogen's Three Hundred Koans is a complete, modern English version of Master Dogen's Three Hundred Koan Shobogenzo translated by Kazuaki Tanahashi and Daido Roshi. This important collection is accompanied by Roshi's commentary, capping verse, and footnotes. |
| Abbot 3 | Abbot John Daido Loori, Roshi - Cozy Up to the Ground of Being - Koans of the Way of Reality, Yunmen's Rice Cake. This talk was given at Zen Mountain Monastery in September 2005. In order to get to the ground of being, we have to first turn and face our demons, and not be driven from them by our fear. In order to receive the dharma, we have to first empty ourselves out. This can be a terrifying process, but it is an essential one. We have to go empty-handed on this journey; only then can we return to recognize our completeness and our perfection. Koans of the Way of Reality is a collection of koans compiled by Daido Roshi at Zen Mountain Monastery. It includes both koans that appear in the traditional collections as well as other writings treated as koans because of their relevance for modern Western practitioners. |
| Teacher 2 | Geoffrey Shugen Arnold, Sensei - Breaking the Habit of Practice - The Gateless Gate, Case 16, The Bell Sound and the Priests' Robe. This talk was given at Zen Center of New York City in May 2005. The Gateless Gate or Wumenkuan is a collection of 48 koans compiled in the early thirteenth century by the Chinese Zen master Wumen Huikai. Each koan is accompanied by Wumen's commentary and verse. The collection is widely used by practitioners to this day. |
