Taking up the classic koan, “Shishuang’s Nothing is Concealed,” Daido Roshi talks about the power and depth of our practice. The simple act of seeing a thought and letting it go, when we really engage it, enables us to overcome the conditioning at the root of our suffering. As we peel back the layers of conditioning, one by one, we discover our true freedom. Freed from the prison we made ourselves, intimate with sound and form, we can express ourselves completely, holding nothing held back.

The koan in this discourse is number 58 from the True Dharma Eye: Master Dogens’ 300 koans, which was translated by Kazuaki Tanahashi and Daido Roshi, and includes Daidoshi’s commentary, capping verse, and footnotes. <itunes:summary>The discipline and formality of Zen training can be both an obstacle and a refuge for us, depending on how we appreciate them. In this talk, “Transcendental Discipline” Ryushin Sensei examines the role of discipline as a necessary part of our spiritual journey— just as we may seek out the discipline of a coach or trainer if we want to improve our tennis game, if we want to wake up to our true nature, we also need someone pushing us to fulfill our true potential.

Konrad Ryushin Marchaj Sensei, is a resident teacher and Vice-Abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery. This live and unedited talk, Transcendental Discipline, was recorded at Zen Mountain Monastery and selected from our 2008 audio library.
